Movie Review: Renaissance
[info]starmalachite lamented to me once that she wished the Anime boom would encourage more European animation to come across to this country.

This review is for her.

Paris, 2054. Ilona Tasuiev, a medical researcher for the megacorporation Avalon has been kidnapped and it is up to Captain Karas to track her down with the help of Ilona's sister, Bislane. But, what kind of trouble will Karas stir up in his search? Why was Ilona kidnapped?

The first thing that comes to mind when watching this is Sin City. Not the movie so much as the comic book. Everything is rendered in sharp black and white, with lots of shadow. The only grays you will find is maybe in window reflections where shading is nessicary. It is a computer animated film that uses heavy use of rotoscope to capture the action. Overall, it looks quite good. They also managed to do a great job with facial expressions, which I thought was a weakness with Final Fantasy, but probably the lack of facial detail helped with that. Less to throw us off.

Probably the weakest thing about the film is the plot. The plot is actually pretty straightforward and some stuff you can see coming a good distance away. Certainly, those familiar with film noir will see nothing new here.

Watching the documentary, the general idea for the animation style was started back in 1998. Since then, the guys involved worked hard to develop a movie studio to do this, since such a beast didn't exist in Europe at the time. This is their first feature film.

I listened to the English dub, that featured Daniel Craig, Catherine McCormack, Ian Holm, and Jonathan Pryce. There is also a French language track. There is some nudity.

Renaissance looked interesting when I saw a trailer at LACon. I'll probably Netflix it, which granted means I may not get *to* it until 2054...

Thanks! Although, IIRC, I was actually talking about anime and manga hopefully helping to make European *comics* more available. But I'll happily take animation too.
